Board of Management Minutes: Jan 1865 – Dec 1875 NHNN/A/4/2

The following copy of Counsel’s opinion responding to Mr Edmonds’ claim for commission was read:

“I am of the opinion that Mr Edmonds was appointed on the terms of the resolution of the Board of Directors of 11th January last and that he would only be entitled to commission on the additional income obtained “through his influence or execution” which he would have to show. It seems, however, that as his well known name has been on all the circulars of the Society, and even on those issued by the Ladies Committee that it would be a very embarrassing question as to how far his “influence” operated on obtaining subscriptions, even though those subscriptions came through the Lord Mayor, or through the Ladies Committee, or through Mr Wilkinson. I should not under the circumstances advise the Board of Directors to dispute the claim, though I think it possible that they might succeed in somewhat reducing it, were it submitted to a jury.

“(Signed) Thomas Chambers, 3 Pump Court, Temple”

Mr Porter was requested to see Mr Edmonds on the subject of the claim and report the result of his interview with the Board.
