Matron’s Reports NHNN/N/3/2

Cicely U Tafe – reports from 21 May 1929 to 22 May 1945

‘The Chairman of the North Staffordshire Infirmary is anxious to know if it would be possible for this Hospital to accept nurses for a short intensive course in neurological surgery. Today I have discussed the matter with the matron, Miss Blakemore. The suggestion is that we shall accept two trained staff nurses at a time, for a period of four month. This Hospital will pay them at the rate of 1st year staff nurses, i.e. £75 together with superannuation. The Infirmary will make up the difference in the salaries to the nurses. It is hoped that both Hospitals would derive some benefit from this scheme; it would certainly help our nursing problem in a small way.

I wish to draw the attention of the Board to the effect that the test examination is having upon our supply of nurses. The women probationers have practically ceased altogether. Five promising male nurses took the last examination – four have failed. This means that even if they are willing to stay on until they can take it in six months time, not any of this time can be counted in their training. The paper was not a suitable one to be put before men of 24 and 26. No doubt it could be answered easily by school children with all their knowledge quite fresh in their minds. I feel a very strong protest should be made to the General Nursing Council.’
