Date: c1866-1948 Level: Collection Admin history: The Maida Vale Hospital, originally established as The London Infirmary for Epilepsy and Paralysis, was founded by Dr Julius Althaus in 1866, initially in a small house in Marylebone, London. Its first appointed consulting surgeon was Alexander Ure; while Julius Althaus became the hospital’s first physician. In 1873 the hospital’s name was changed to The Hospital for Diseases of the Nervous System. In 1876 it became The Hospital for Epilepsy and Paralysis (HEP). In 1873 the hospital moved to new, improved premises in Regent’s Park. In 1900 the institution’s final location was established at Maida Vale, and it became The Maida Vale Hospital for Nervous Diseases in 1937. Following World War Two, under the auspices of the Ministry of Health, the Hospital amalgamated with The National Hospital, Queen Square to form The National Hospitals for Nervous Diseases.
