Date: 1897-1934 Level: Series Admin history: Sir Rickman Godlee carried out the first successful operation to remove a tumour on a patient’s brain at Maida Vale Hospital on 25 November 1884. The patient had been under the care of Dr A Hughes Bennett. After remaining well for some time, the patient developed meninigitis with a fungus cerebri and died on 23 December 1884. The operation attracted much interest in the contemporary medical and lay press and sparked a heated controversy in the pages of The Times between proponents of animal experiments and anti-vivisectionists. The fiftieth anniversary was celebrated with a Jubilee Dinner and other events in 1934.
