Gowers candle.

Sir William Gowers, was appointed physician to the Hospital in 1872. He was a prolific author, including the two volume "Manual of Disease of the Nervous System (1886-8) : "the bible of neurology" - first edition is available in Queen Square Library, along with the original illustrations. Gowers' case note taking was meticulous, as shown in the volumes of case notes held in Queen Square Archives, some of which are digitised. The Gowers' materials in the Archives are the most varied in the collection, thanks to loans and donations by the Gowers family, including sketchbooks, children's journals and diaries. This candle used as a light source by Gowers for his Ophthalmoscope.
